"Mortgage Rates Reach New Low"
NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 6, 2003--Mortgage rates fell this
week, with the benchmark 30-year fixed mortgage equaling a modern-day
low. This week, the 30-year fixed rate mortgage dropped 3 basis points
to 5.96 percent in the Bankrate.com survey of large lenders, tying the mark first established Dec. 30, 2002. The
mortgages in this week's survey had an average total of 0.38 discount
and origination points.
Uncertainty over war with Iraq has helped keep rates at this low
level because risk-averse investors have fled the stock market for the
safety of fixed-return investments, pushing their prices up. When the
prices of these fixed securities goes up, mortgage rates tend to go
down. "Financial markets await developments on the Iraq situation,"
says Bankrate senior financial analyst Greg McBride. "This
wait-and-see mode is keeping mortgage rates range-bound. Mortgage
rates will begin to move with the onset of any conflict or the
reaching of any resolution."
